"The Need has Never Been so Great".
Sister Teresa Aguilar in Tijuana, BC., Mexico
A single mom in Tijuana, with 2 young daughters is forced to leave them
at home while she leaves at 5am and will not be able to get home until 6pm in
the evening. She does this 6 days every week. Years ago, her husband left her
for another woman and she fends for herself and her daughters.
While she goes to work, her daughters get ready
for school and walk to the next colonia to get to school by 7am and will walk
home at 1pm. They quietly walk into their fenced and locked yard and slip into
their home and lock the door while they await their mother's return.
Another single mother, worried about her young
childrens' safety, yet needing to leave for work takes a padlock and locks
her 4 children inside their small home. She hopes they are safer inside than
roaming the streets unattended.
While she is gone, the children attempt to light
a propane burner in an attempt to cook something to eat. The flame gets out
of control. With the door locked on the outside, and the windows barred, what
was meant to protect them prevents their escape to safety. The children perish
in a fire that engulfs the entire structure in a matter of a few minutes.
These two TRUE stories are examples of the many children living in
"at-risk" situations in the colonias of Northern Baja California. Children left unattended have fallen into gangs, prostitution, kidnappings and even trafficking.
CasaBuilders Creating Hope for Baja's Forgotten Children
Casabuilders are building the Mi Casa Children's Home.
In the 9 years ULBC CasaBuilders has been constructing homes for
needy families in Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico, we have seen the great need
for a new children's home. In 2004, Casabuilders founders had a vision to build a new childrens home in Mexico. But where could we build such a place? How could we create a place to provide Baja's forgotten children with a hopeful future?
In July 2006, Casabuilders was blessed with the gift of 5 acres
of incredible ranch land on which to build MI CASA CHILDREN'S HOME. Since July of 2006, CasaBuilders teams have been diligently constructing the Visitors Center to house our volunteer teams and leaders. Even though, 2009 was economically tough for all of us, Casabuilders continued to make progress. 2010 promises to be a great year! Many of our volunteer teams are headed back to help us and we'd love to have you and your friends, family, or group come and join in! View our progress so far....
